Here's why it's OK to skip breakfast

2020-07-02

We've heard it a numerous time that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that one should never skip it if their goal is to lose fat and bodyweight.

This comes from the thought process that eating breakfast will 'boost their metabolism' which has been slowed down while sleeping.

Well, as convincing as it sounds, this is a false claim and scientifically it doesn't make any sense. In a meta-analysis done, it showed that people who were forced to add breakfast in their diet actually surpassed their TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) and were actually put on a caloric surplus because of the added breakfast. In simple words, with the added breakfast, it added extra calories to their diet and their new diet was primed to gain weight.

I am not recommending to skip breakfast but if you are not used to having breakfast or prefer not to, then it's okay to skip it.

If you are used to eating breakfast, you can still be on a caloric deficit (fat loss diet) by optimizing the overall calories you're eating throughout the whole day.

In summary, what matters the most  is how many calories in total you ate throughout the whole day and not a single meal. You can lose fat by eating a wingle meal or 8 meals a day, similarly you can gain fat by eating one meal a day as well as 8 meals throughout.

However, it is recommended to split the calories into 3-4 meals in order to provide a consistant flow of energy for your body throughout the whole day.
